The UQ Composites Group conducts research in three major areas; Materials and Processes, Testing and Characterisation, and Modelling and simulation. The work conducted covers both the aspects of fundamental research as well as industry applications where rapid solutions are required.

We have a strong research focus on innovative manufacturing and processes for composites, biocomposites and other hybrid structures. Research activities include biocomposite compounding, extrusion of short-fibre composites, reactive processing of thermoplastic composites, metal composites hybrid laminates, and thermoset composite assembly.

Mechanical testing

Testing and Characterisation

We have extensive experience in non-destructive testing and characterisation of various aspects of composite materials. Our research focuses on structural health monitoring using guided waves and non-linear acoustics, as well as mechanical testing and high resolution surface/interface characterisation.

SHM sensor placement optimisation

Modelling and Simulation

Modelling and simulation of composite materials is being used extensively in the group for applications ranging from failure mechanism predictions to sensor placement optimisation. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools have been developed for non-linear analysis and complex material models. Probabilistic design is being used for characterisation of biocomposite materials.
