    For Northgate-based composites transport specialists, Fibreglass Design Panels, the relationship began at the 2015 Composites Australia CRC-ACS Conference, where Director Leona Reif met Michael Heitzmann, a lecturer and one of the main drivers behind the University's recently expanded UQ Composites Group. -UQ was keen to link their students with industry when undertaking their research projects and we were interested in exploring new materials and applications for composites and supporting education in the composites sector; says Ms Reif.

    Dr. Michael Heitzmann was successful in obtaing a CIEF Grant, in collaboration with Airbus Helicopters. This project will attract $80,000 funding to UQ Composites Group and invlovinvolve one post-doctoral fellow and one occupational trainee.

    Australian breakthroughs in techniques for welding composite materials are changing the future of aerospace engineering by cutting aircraft construction time and cost. University of Queensland PhD student Luigi Vandi has worked on a new process that allows carbon-epoxy composite materials to be welded by incorporating a thin layer of weldable material during the manufacturing process.
